Insects are the largest class (Insecta or Hexapoda) of the Phylum Arthropoda. The insects have specific characteristics that set them apart from other Arthropods.

1) a body divided into three distinct regions: a head, thorax and abdomen
2) the middle region (thorax) bears three pairs of legs and most often two pairs of wings
3) the presence of antennae
