The
classification of kingdom is divided into a number of major groups called
phyla. Each phylum is divided into classes, each class
into orders, each order into families, each family
into genera and each genus into species. The species
is the basic category; it is a kind or type of animal and is part of what is
called the scientific name. A species is defined as a group of organisms
with common characteristics that are capable of interbreeding.
