Insects grow by a series of molts, in which the exoskeleton (outer shell) is shed and renewed. They change in form as they grow and the degree of this change differs from group to group. This developmental change is termed metamorphosis. The stages between molts are referred to as instars. Successive instars vary in size and other features.
