During
complete metamorphosis the egg hatches into basically a worm-like form
termed a larva. This stage lasts a few to several instars, increasing in size
and sometimes changing color or other characters. After the molt of the last
instar the insect changes to a pupa. When the insect emerges from the pupal
state it is an adult. Although in many cases some coloration and minor maturation
of features occurs the insect does not molt or grow further during its life.
