The Thorax

The thorax is divided into three segments, the prothorax, metathorax and mesothorax. Each segment bears a pair of legs at its base and the metathorax and mesothorax bear wings on the top.

The pronotum is often an important feature of the thorax. This structure is the top hardened plate of the prothorax. Its shape and features are sometimes used to distinguish insect orders and families.
