The largest and most common insect orders are sometimes referred to as the "big five". These are the Coleoptera (beetles), Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), Hymenoptera (bees, wasps, sawfiles and ants), Diptera (flies and gnats) and the Hemiptera (the true bugs). Taken as a whole these orders represent about three fourths of known arthropods and 85% of known insects. We will take a look at the identifying characters important to each group separately.
