Orthoptera - Grasshoppers, Crickets and Katydids

Most often common names of this group are sufficient for identification. The length of antennae, length of the ovipositor, shape of the pronotum, shape of the head and form of the legs are generally used to distinguish Orthopteran families and subfamilies.
This is a medium sized, familiar and common group. There are 913 species reported in North America
The mouthparts are of the chewing type and arise from the bottom of the head.
Winged Orthoptera have thickened front wings and membranous hind wings.
