Growth of a spider requires shedding its exoskeleton in a manner similar to that of insects. There are 4 to 12 molts before it reaches maturity. Spiders grow in size during these molts and although coloration and other features may change slightly there is no pupal stage like that of complete metamorphosis of the insects.
